Nothing beats the magic of the first musical encounter.
Of course there isn’t always magic when two musicians decide to get it on. Music is very much like sex in that way. You either recognize each other, and know immediately that you want more. Or you realize that you better move on. I guess that is what Derek Bailey meant when he said, he’d play with everyone ...once.
Tons of factors come into play: Skills, seduction, experience, expectations, empathy,
desires, preferences, cultural background, timing, setting, individuality, intoxication,
nervousness, power relations, your physical state, your psychological state ... Sometimes it turns out a mess, boring, embarrassing, or utter crap. Sometimes, however, you just click and disappear in a tunnel of passion, play and spontaneous combustion from which you emerge later, sweaty, dazed, not believing that 30 minutes just passed like three.
In the case of Stumpf, it was like that ... pure lust.
Which is why Sunra Bullock decided to keep and edit the very first recordings with Ilia Gorovitz that would lead to the foundation of Stumpf and, eventually, edelfaul recordings. Recorded on a Zoom recorder they were decidedly lo-fi, but the raw energy was right there, so with just a few edits and an enhanced and / or overdubbed bass, it gave a strong direction towards what Stumpf might one day become. It turned out differently, mind you. But still these three songs are the closest representation of Ur-Stumpf, and the cradle
of the edelfaul universe.
